Discovery and Development of Therapeutic Drugs against Lethal Human RNA Viruses: a Multidisciplinary Assault.

Abstract

A total of 5,799 samples were submitted for prescreen RNA-type antiviral evaluation over the grant period to USAMRIID. After confirmation of activity, a good number of high priority extracts of plant and animal origin (and synthetic compounds) were identified for further research (fractionation, isolation and characterization of new antiviral compounds). The continued fractionation of these leads is in progress. In addition to the natural products research, further development of the scale-up isolation of pancratistatin, an active lead against Japanese Encephalitis from both plant sources by greenhouse cultivation and semi-synthetic transformation of another plant product, narciclasine, occurred during the grant period. For the semi-synthetic research, seven tons of Narcissus incomparabilis has been obtained and is at the initial stage of scale-up isolation.
