Uses of Color in Complex Information Displays

Abstract

This report summarized human factors research concerning the impact on operator performance of the use of color in displays. It is intended for display researchers and design engineers as a general review of relevant research in experimental psychology and human factors engineering. The findings have been organized into several major sections. Basic attributes and phenomena of color perception are reviewed in the first section, along with some more complex perceptual effects. This section has attempted to provide display design guidance based on research in color perception and physiology. The next section highlights the primary ways that color can enhance operator performance. Although these specific applications have been discussed in the section entitled Color and Task Performance. In this section, the impact of color has been summarized for perceptual, selective attention, cognitive, and psychomotor tasks. Additional considerations for the use of color, such as character size, ambient lighting, and visual fatigue, have also been reported. Finally, recommendations for using color, for selecting colors, and for enhancing symbol recognition are provided.
