Proceedings of the Annual Meeting, Aquatic Plant Control Research Program (25th) Held in Orlando, Florida on 26-30 November 1990
Abstract
The overall objective of this annual meeting is to thoroughly review aquatic plant control needs and establish priorities for future research. The following directional changes were made: (1) Research on laser applications was terminated; (2) Mechanical harvesters were developed and tested. (3) Efforts were made to discover beneficial uses of harvested plants; (4) Chemical applications were effective, but primarily as a maintenance measure; (5) Biological controls such as insects and fishes seemed to present the most perplexing short-term problems, but also seemed to hold the most hope for long- term solutions and (6) Management strategies, such as water-level manipulation, might be employed. Applications were found in some situations, but were limited. A better understanding of the ecology and physiology of problem plants was essential to identification and development of control agents.
