Survey and Analysis of Environmental Requirements for Shipboard Electronic Equipment Applications. Volume 1.
Abstract
This interim report presents the results of a survey and related investigations to ascertain the environmental requirements typically specified for Naval Shipboard applications and to compare these requirements with available VMEbus ruggedized and MIL SPEC components in order to characterize the efforts required to upgrade VMEbus components for Navy Standard Backplane use. Applications for the Navy Standard Backplane will involve environments which are more stressful than the office environment for which most commercial products are designed. Fortunately, some effort has already gone into the ruggedization and/or militarization of components for VMEbus. The VMEbus can effectively be used as a baseline for survey and analysis of environmental requirements that are met by manufacturers of existing VMEbus components. A current market survey of these special application products, and an objective, unbiased analysis of the environmental specifications to which the products were designed and tested was performed in order to determine what Navy-funded efforts will be required in order to develop Navy Standard Backplane components to various levels of ruggedization and militarization.
