Considerations for Royal Australian Air Force Operations in the North of Australia

Abstract

Recently enunciated defence policy in Australia has swung the focus of interest towards the north and surrounding offshore areas. This region has been long neglected from both a defence and infrastructure point of view because of its harsh climate and the vast distances involved. If the Royal Australian Air Force is to be able to operate effectively throughout this region and provide the degree of security only air power can offer, it must come to grips with the peculiarities of this environment. The process may be costly in terms of infrastructure but would represent a sound investment in an area of the country vital to national interests.
