Microstrip Discontinuity Models to 60 GHz

Abstract

A new modeling concept, in which discontinuities are coupled to package modes, has been formulated. Analytical expressions describing the electrical behavior of various gallium arsenide microstrip discontinuities for frequencies up to 60 GHz are derived. These are suitable for use in Computer Aided Design (CAD) of Monolithic Microwave and Millimeter Wave Integrated Circuits (MMICs). The discontinuities modelled are the Open End, Gap, 90 degree Bend and T-Junction. A physics related modeling approach was used to obtain equivalent circuits representing the microstrip and first package LSM mode and their interaction at the discontinuity. The main section explains the modeling approach undertaken and provides a description of the discontinuity models. An appendix provides details of a 3-D full wave analysis method based on a spectral operator expansion technique. This was used to check numerical results needed for the modeling. (Author)
