A Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Investigation of the Annealing of the Au(III) Surface

Abstract

This report describes how the quenching and annealing procedure can affect the formation and morphology of gold facets. We show that elastic and plastic deformations that occur in the AU sphere upon rapid cooling can propagate across the facet to produce highly ordered surface features and a periodicity of 60 Angstroms superimposed on automically flat terraces. The effects of annealing the gold sphere on this structure and the appearance of the surface reconstruction of gold are discussed.
