Spatial and Temporal Properties of the Noise Field Observed in TAGEX 87

Abstract

This report presents an analysis of the vertical spatial structure of the near-bottom ambient noise field at a western Atlantic site, based on recorded data from a 24-element vertical line array. The properties of the noise field are discussed in terms of dominant sources and propagation mechanisms. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of local and distant shipping on beam noise levels for a vertical array.
