Prototype Automated Identification System for Parachutes

Abstract

This report documents the development and demonstration test of an automated identification system for parachutes. This system features a bar code tag which replaces the paper logbook used to record parachute data. Pack, repair and issue data are collected on portable readers and transferred to a computer for storage and report generation. The automated system was developed to prevent loss of data, eliminate duplication of effort, and provide a database to facilitate inventory forecasting and the determination of improved service life criteria.
