Pilot Command Center Testbed Development Environment: A Better Way to Develop C3 Systems

Abstract

TRW has recently completed a research project sponsored by the USAF's Electronics Systems Division (ESD) to support the development of the Pilot Command Center (PCC) for SDI. The PCC is a facility that will be used by the USAF to develop the system level requirements for the Communication, Command and Control (C3) elements of SDI with particular emphasis on determining the role of the human in control by means of experimentation. TRW's role in this project was to evaluate the feasibility of reusing the software architecture developed on an earlier ESD sponsored command center development project for this application. The PCC Testbed Development Environment (PTDE) which is the project's primary product provides the capability to rapidly implement and integrate prototype C3 system application software (including message sets, databases, mission algorithms, and interactive displays) and to easily migrate the prototype software into a complete C3 system testbed suitable for conducting realtime experiments.
