Center of Excellence in Biotechnology (Fellowships)

Abstract

Graduate student fellowships in the area of Protein Structure and Function, with subcategories of Enzymes and Receptors, were awarded annually on a competitive basis. Research activities of fellows were aimed at providing a fundamental understanding of the interactions between ligands and receptors. Areas of emphasis included protein folding, thermal stability and assembly, controlled release neuroagents and detection systems. This research continues to provide the fundamental science and knowledge base required for the ultimate production of Designer receptors and ligand engineered for biosensors environmental decontamination, and for chemical biological blocking agents. ARO fellows, thus selected, represented eight different Fields of Study at Cornell: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacology, Genetics, Vet microbiology, Animal science, and Animal health. They were involved in interdisciplinary projects covering the areas of cell surface receptors, protein structure and function, molecular biology, and bioprocess engineering.
