Laboratory Graduate Fellowship Program Annual Report for 1990. Appendix C.
Abstract
Critical to the success of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) mission is the ability of AFOSR to draw upon the research community in the United States to respond to its needs. In recent years, however, the number of U.S. citizens seeking advanced degrees in the areas of Air Force research interests has been decreasing. This refers specifically to the number of U.S. citizens obtaining Ph.D. degrees in areas of mathematics, science, and engineering that are of interest to the Air Force. This situation points toward the potential problem of a future shortage of qualified researchers in areas critical to the nation's security interest. To address this problem, the United States Air Force Laboratory Graduate Fellowship Program (USAF/LGFP) was established. The program annually provides three-year fellowships for at least 25 Ph.D. students in research areas of interest to the Air Force.
