Abstract

This three-day, 24 hour short course is an overview of the neurological, psychiatric, and psychological aspects of aerospace medicine. The purpose of the course is to further the knowledge of the flight surgeon and aeromedical examiner in the issues of neuropsychiatry. Secondly, the course will provide aeromedical information for the neuropsychiatric specialist. The course describes the unique application of psychiatry, psychology, and neurology to the aviation environment. Topics such as motivation to fly, human performance, stress in aviation and the failing aviator will be discussed. Further psychiatric and neurologic disorders found among aviators will be presented. The unique aspects of assessment and decision making about flying status among neuropsychiatric cases will be presented. This course provides a thorough overview in a difficult area. There is no doubt that the central nervous system plays an important part in the aeromedical aspects of aviation. However, the central nervous system is highly complex and is not as well understood as other human systems. However, much has been learned over the years since neuropsychiatric specialists have been involved with aviation since the very beginning. This course summarizes the concepts and information currently available in aeromedical neuropsychiatry.
