USATHAMA Installation Restoration Program Research and Development Strategies
Abstract
This report is the result of a study conducted by the U.S. Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency (USATHAMA) to identify and prioritize potential research and development (R and D) activities that could reduce the cost of environmental restoration activities at Army installations where munitions production or tactical vehicle maintenance has been performed. In particular, the study examined potential R and D investments for restoration of soils and ground water contaminated with explosives, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds. Numerous new and innovative technologies that represent broad technology categories (physical, chemical, thermal, or biological processes) were considered in evaluating potential R and D investments for these restorations, and priorities for R and D investment were assigned to these technology categories.
