Radical Islam and Its Effect on Politics in the Middle East
Abstract
Islam plays a significant role in the political machinations in the Middle East. This paper seeks to explore the militant end of the political spectrum and its effect on politics in the Middle East and the concomitant effect on American foreign policy. This paper will analyze Radical Islam by outlining its pre-modern underpinnings, primarily represented by the influence of the fourteenth century theoretician, Ibn Taymiyyah, as well as the modern influences of Sayyid Abul ala Maulani Maududi of Pakistan and Sayyid Qutb of Egypt. The notion of Radical Islam will be defined and the precepts and goals of the movement will be elucidated. In addition, the paper will examine the present crisis environment concerning Islam in the Middle East and present some basic characteristics common to individuals most likely to participate in activities that could be considered under the appellation Radical Islam. Finally, the relationship of Radical Islam and the foreign policy of the United States will be discussed.
