Design and Implementation of a Multimedia DBMS: Complex Query Processing

Abstract

Traditional Database Management Systems (DBMS) are capable of managing only alphanumeric data. The Multimedia Database Management (MDBMS) prototype started at the Computer Science Department of Naval PostgradSchool in 1988 made it possible to capture, store, manage, retrieve and present different media information such image and sound by using the current, modem computer technology. In the existing MDBMS, if a query references only formatted data, it is passed to INGRES directly, but if a query includes media data, then the query is decomposed into multiple subqueries each of which must be individually processed, and the intermediate results of which must be recomposed to form the final result to be given to the user. This thesis will concentrate on complex queries involving nesting conditions and multiple selections which are not supported by the existing MDBMS prototype.
