Nonlinear Normal and Axial Force Indicial Responses for a Two Dimensional Airfoil

Abstract

Normal and axial force indicial responses for a 2-D NACA 0015 airfoil undergoing small step changes in angle of attack have been measured in a tow tank. The airfoil was pitched about the quarter chord and the Reynolds number , as 95,000. First order and it second order tests were conducted. In the first order tests, the angle of attack prior to the step onset was held constant. In the second order study, the airfoil and was ramped up at constant rate to the onset angle. Step onset angles in the range O < alpha < 60 deg were considered. The step responses have been integrated numerically to compute the loading during a ramp-up motion. The integrated results are compared with baseline load data taken with the same airfoil.
