4-D Interconnect Experimental Development

Abstract

This report summarizes the work performed during the first year of a two year program aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of constructing a 4- dimensional neural network based on the unique properties of spectral hole burning (SHB) materials. The work is progressing as originally planned with the basic optical system nearly complete and tested. The necessary SHB materials have been synthesized and excellent quality holograms have been recorded and retrieved. Both wavelength and angle multiplexing have been demonstrated with no apparent crosstalk. The system design has been precisely defined and all key components have been selected. A discussion is presented describing a set of initial tests which are aimed at verifying the basic operational capabilities of the system. The next phase of complete system integration and testing will soon begin.
