Coordinate Systems for Space and Geophysical Applications

Abstract

Many coordinate systems used at Phillips Laboratory, Hanscom AFB, for space and geophysical applications are described. This document describes astronomical, orbital, and geomagnetic systems, and special emphasis is given to magnetospheric coordinates in which radiation belt particle investigations may be made. An extensive list of terms and abbreviations is included. These coordinate systems are identified by their origins and the primary and secondary reference axes, which allows them to be systematically compared, categorized and diagrammed. Angle coordinate systems for defining attitude are intimately related, and are also covered. Transformation matrices are provided for several systems, for conversion from one coordinate system into another.
