Strategic Appraisal of Hungary

Abstract

During the years of the Cold War Hungary was a member state of the Warsaw Treaty Organization (WTO). From the very beginning of the foundation of this organization Hungary's foreign policy, structure and development of its economy, military strategy, etc., were determined by the common interests of this politico-military bloc. Because of the immense Soviet power and its role within the WTO it exerted a powerful influence on Hungary's national security policy. Actually, in most cases she was told what to do and how to do it. Fortunately those times are over. Hungary regained her independence and sovereignty and freedom of action. This changed situation demands that a new strategic assessment be developed. This study provides an appraisal of what is at stake, what the problems are, how Hungary is doing and provides some policy recommendations.
