Military enforcement of economic sanctions will grow as an option for U.S. policy makers. Such application of armed forces tests the ability of a theater commander to utilize tactical assets to conduct effective interdiction of specified commerce in pursuance of national objectives. Key variables in operational planning for sanctions enforcement include measures of effectiveness, rules of engagement complementarity of forces, and sustainment. In general, the more extensive the coverage of the sanctions regime, the easier the planning and execution burdens confronting the theater commander. Economic Sanctions.
