Abstract
The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) is an upland game bird that occurs in agricultural lands, forests, and rangelands throughout the central and eastern United States. The bobwhite is an extremely popular small game species and is harvested in greater numbers than any other nonmigratory upland game bird in North America. Federal, State, and private conservation and management programs often feature the bobwhite in suitable habitat throughout its range. A report on the bobwhite is provided as Section 4.1.3 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The purpose of the report is to provide Department of Defense and Corps of Engineers biologists with the information needed to effectively manage installations or project lands for this species. Major topics covered in the report include distribution, status, species characteristics, population attributes, habitat requirements, and management. The geographic range of the northern bobwhite is described, and its status as a game species is discussed. Diagnostic characters are presented, and methods for distinguishing sex and age are provided. Population information includes sections on the covey, population density, sex and age ratios, home range, breeding biology, productivity, and mortality.
