Brick Model Tests of Shallow Underground Magazines

Abstract

A series of 1:25-scale model tests in a brick test bed were conducted to investigate the airblast and debris hazards from accidental explosions in shallow underground magazines in jointed rock. The results demonstrated that the blast effects produced in a large-scale test of a shallow magazine could be reproduced with reasonable accuracy in a 1:25-scale model. The model tests also provided an experimental basis for extending the results of the large-scale test to account for variations in the thickness and strength of the rock cover and in the chamber loading density.
