Polar Mesospheric Cloud Experiment.
Abstract
We designed a satellite complement of remote sounding experiments whose objective was to determine the properties of Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMC) and their atmospheric environment. These high-altitude clouds form an important natural background phenomenon against which optical detection of rocket plumes must be detected and measured. We also performed analyses of existing satellite data on PMC and developed a microphysical model of mesospheric cloud evolution. An outgrowth of this program was the design and construction of an instrument which will be flown in a sounding rocket experiment to study the polarization properties of scattered light from PMC.
