Army Medical Department Officers in Division Assignments: Prepared to Succeed, or Doomed to Fail?

Abstract

This study seeks to find a better combination of training and assignment policies for Army Medical Department (AMEDD) officers. The author conducted the study because the Office of the Surgeon General (OTSG) has expressed concerns about AMEDD officers in divisional and other Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E) assignments. The study will provide recommendations to OTSG on innovative methods of preparing AMEDD officers for tactical unit assignments. It also will recommend changes in policies for selecting AMEDD officers for tactical unit assignments, changes in the educational curriculum currently used to train AMEDD officers, and changes in teaching methods. The study's other motivation was a survey of 100 former battalion commanders who expressed their dissatisfaction with the performance of their AMEDD officers. The commanders were students at the U.S. Army War College, Class of 1992.
