Roles for the Army in a Peacetime Engagement Strategy for the Pacific
Abstract
This monograph, focusing on the Pacific theater, projects a peacetime engagement strategy and specifies the contributions which can effectively be made by the U.S. Army. The study assesses U.S. interests and objectives in the post-cold war security environment; suggests the strategic concepts which can provide guidance for the U.S. military, especially the Army, to achieve those objectives; and, lastly, discusses some important resource requirements and issues for the Army. The author's basic conclusions are that U.S. interests and objectives still require a military presence in the region, and that the Army has special opportunities and responsibilities--at least as significant as those of the other services--for enhancing them. U.S. Army; Pacific theater; peacetime engagement strategy; military strategy.
