Mechanisms of Cytotoxicity of the AIDS Virus.
Abstract
Regulatory genes of HIV-1, HIV-2, and SIV are important in modulating virus infection and infection and transmission in vivo. Viral proteins R (VPR) and X (VPX) and the negative factor (NEF) are three of the least well characterized regulatory proteins. Identification of their functions, their mechanisms of action and structure-function relationships of each protein, in vitro and in vivo will assist in our understanding of the pathogenesis of HIV induced disease. This information will be critical in defining therapeutic approaches to suppressing HIV-1 infection, replication, and transmission.
