Leadership and Total Quality Management

Abstract

The leadership of large and complex organizations in today's environment of shrinking resources requires a strong commitment by the leader. Total Quality Management when combine with good leadership and management skills yields increased productivity. This paper will focus on the skills required of senior level leaders (leaders at the top one or two echelons of an organization) , the application of those skills to TQM, and the role of leadership when implementing TQM. Also two examples of successful TQM implementation in government and industry will be reviewed with a focus on leader actions which contributed to organizational improvements. Finally, the paper will suggest actions and techniques which may prove helpful to leaders when implementing TQM.
