Instructor Considerations in the Design of Optimal Training Devices

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to develop a cost-benefit model for use in choosing instructor support features to be incorporated into the instructor/operator stations (IOS) of simulators. The cost-benefit model was developed in the form of an expert system. Alternative configurations for IOSs are generated using a taxonomy of terms with which to describe characteristics and features needed by an instructor. These alternatives are subjected to a cost-benefit analysis in which the major benefit for the use of an instructor support feature is the reduction of overhead time, which is defined as that time required for (trainer) operations that reduces the time available for student practice on assigned tasks. For each configuration the model produces estimated (1) total annual training time, (2) total annual training overhead time, (3) total trainer acquisition cost, and (4) lifecycle costs expressed as net present value. The program is written in FORTRAN and runs in the IBM XT environment using MS DOS 3.0 or higher operating system.
