Dipolar Interaction Assisted Effects on Second Harmonic Generation

Abstract

The coefficients for second harmonic generation (SHG) for the 2-methyl 4-nitroaniline/poly(methyl methacrylate) guest/host system were measured as a function of the NLO chromophore concentration and of the poling field strength. The orientational order parameters (OP) were calculated from the SHG coefficients. The OP's were found to depend on the NLO chromophore concentration. The concentration dependence was associated with Kirkwood's g-factor describing the orientational pair correlation. The ratio of order parameters L33/L31, measured in the weak poling field condition is 3, and independent of the NLO chromophore concentration. This is in agreement with the result of a recent calculation.
