Robert E. Lee as an Operational Commander: A Critical Look

Abstract

The halo effect of Lee's personality and tactical expertise has been allowed, perhaps even manipulated, to remove the shadow of doubt that should have accompanied every rudimental examination of his performance as a military commander. The purpose of this paper is to reintroduce a little doubt, precipitate questions, and suggest a few selected lessons learned that may possibly be of some value in today's military arena, specifically at the operational level.
