Automated Handling and Assembling of Non-Rigid Objects

Abstract

This is the fifth semi-annual report of the project entitled 'Automated Handling and Assembling of Non-Rigid Objects'. This report covers the period from January 16, 1992 to July 15, 1992. The objective of this research project is to identify mechanisms for automated handling and assembling of non- rigid objects. To accomplish the goal, four aspects of the problem have been identified in our original proposal. These are- (a) Study the deformation characteristics of non-rigid materials; (b) Investigate optimal tool structures for handling non-rigid objects; (c) Develop sensing mechanisms to locate non-rigid objects; and (d) Develop motion control mechanisms for the host machines.
