Human Performance in Complex Task Environments: A Basis for the Application of Adaptive Automation.

Abstract

There are a number of human performance issues that are highlighted by the application of adaptive automation technology to complex task environments. Few of these issues have received empirical human performance research. This paper describes those issues that have arisen with the Naval Air Warfare Center's Adaptive Allocation for Intelligent Cockpits (AFAIC) program. adaptive automation; aircraft automation; pilot workload; person-machine systems; aviation human factors.
