Consolidation of Power Coated Thermoplastic Preform Process Modeling.

Abstract

The purpose of this report was to characterize the consolidation of thermoplastic powder coated material. The process of consolidation was studied using several techniques. These included the wedge laminate, direct consolidation measurements and mechanical testing of laminates. The wedge laminate was used to visually characterize the steps of consolidation. The process of particle melting, resin flow, void removal and fiber deformation were determined from this experiment. The consolidation measurements were performed in order to determine the rate of consolidation and the effect of temperature and pressure on the consolidation process. The results of the consolidation experiments were compared to predictions made by a computer model.
