NATO's New Front Line: The Growing Importance of the Southern Tier
Abstract
World attention is focused more and more on violent events along NATO's Southern Tier. Given the rising scale and intensity of violence in and around the Mediterranean Basin and the continued withdrawal of the Red Army from Central Europe, the center of gravity of the North Atlantic alliance shifting to the Southern Tier. The author analyzes the risks facing the Southern Tier of Europe, assesses the degree to which new U.S. and NATO strategic concepts apply to the conditions of that region, and evaluates the ability of the Alliance to carry out and emerging operational concepts in those areas of the Southern Tier with the greatest potential for violence. More specifically, the author highlights the importance of Turkey and the consequences for the United States should Turkey perceive inadequate NATO support for its security.
