Proceedings of the International Conference on Langmuir-Blodgett Films (5th) Held in Paris, France on 26-30 August 1991,

Abstract

Since the pioneering work of I. Langmuir and K. Blodgett and the fantastic stride in molecular architecture achieved by H. Kuhn in the sixties, the field of Langmuir-Blodgett films has developed steadily. In the last decade it has literally exploded, owing to the use of the Langmuir-Blodgett method as a molecular ordering method in quite a large range of disciplines: non-linear optics, new organic conducting materials, biology, solid-state chemistry, solid-state physics, thermodynamics, magnetism, electronics, molecular electronics, and others. The sequence of subjects arising in the first five International Conferences on Langmuir-Blodgett Films reflects this evolution well: while contributions to the first conference (in Durham, 1981) were mostly from teams concerned with the Langmuir-Blodgett method and Langmuir-Blodgett films as such, now a number of papers clearly come from other disciplines in which the Langmuir-Blodgett method is used as an ordering tool to build up new supermolecular architectures. This is why as many invited talks as possible in this Fifth Conference were readily chosen from fields other than Langmuir-Blodgett films, but still concerning the Langmuir-Blodgett method.
