Federal Research: SEMATECH's Technological Progress and Proposed R&D program

Abstract

In summary, SEMATECH appears to be on schedule for achieving, by the end of 1992, its overall objective of demonstrating the capability to manufacture state-of-the-art semiconductors using only U.S. equipment. However, according to SEMATECH and several of its members, this capability will enable the U.S. semiconductor industry just to reach partial with-but not surpass-its Japanese competition in terms of semiconductor manufacturing equipment capability at that time. In addition, published data indicate the U.S. semiconductor equipment suppliers and semiconductor manufacturers have arrested their decline the worldwide market share; how much of this change is attributable to SEMATECH's efforts, however, is not clear.
