NDE for Thick Section Composites

Abstract

To measure and report on the elastic moduli of thick, graphite-epoxy, filament-wound composites. The purpose of this work is to permit the calculation of allowed elastic wave modes and directions for nondestructive evaluation of thick composites. In addition, the anisotropic elastic moduli so obtained will contain important information about the microstructure of the material and the vibration characteristics of structures made from it. As the material has been found to be highly anisotropic, it is expected that ultrasonic interrogation to find flaws will be complicated. To calculate the wave propagation phenomena which may be useful or detrimental, it is necessary to measure the elastic moduli of the material.
