A Relational/Object-Oriented Database Management System: R/OODBMS

Abstract

During the last decade, the business sector has become increasingly reliant upon information management. This trend will most likely continue. Deficiencies/constraints in conventional database management systems continue to become more apparent as this reliance continues to grow. Primary areas of deficiency are in modeling, storing, and managing increasingly complex information as in CAD and CASE among others. The purpose of this thesis is to implement a combined relational/object-oriented database management system that will overcome these deficiencies/constraints. Three possible approaches to such a system exist: build the system from scratch, build object-oriented capabilities on top of an existing relational system, or build relational capabilities on top of an existing object-oriented system. The last approach is the one chosen for this work. This thesis expands previous work in this area and uses a commercial object-oriented database management system, IDB, in its implemen tation. Database, Relational model, Object-oriented model, Object- oriented programming, Heterogeneous database.
