Weight Loss After AM and PM SDV Dives and Use of DDAVP.

Abstract

Post-dive weight loss, as an estimate of body fluid loss, was obtained in 13 SEALs after 28 daytime (AM) and 66 nighttime (PM) man-dives in a SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV). Water temperature was 26 C. AM weight loss averaged 1.25+ or - O.l4 kg for the 166+ or - 8 min dives; there was no ignificant correlation between weight loss and dive time. Nine divers received desamino-8- D-argnine (DDAVP, 20 ug intranasally) before one of their AM dives to determine if the drug lessened fluid loss. There was no difference in weight loss between DDAVP and no drug (PL) dives. PM weight loss was 1.35+ or - 0.12 kg for the dives lasting 234+ or - 7 min. The weight loss was comparable to the AM dives, and represented 1.7% of total body weight. A significant correlation occurred for PM weight loss versus dive time, both for PL and DDAVP dives. Diving, hydration, vasopressin, immersion, diurnal.
