Transportability Testing of Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Pods in a Side-Opening Commercial Container.

Abstract

The U.S. Army Defense Ammunition Center and School (USADACS), Validation Engineering Division (SMCAC-DEV), was tasked by USADACS, Transportation Engineering Division (SMCAC-DET), to test a reduced dunnage blocking and bracing procedure for Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) pods in a commercial side-opening container. The test sequence consisted of the following: rail impact, road hazard, road trip washboard course, and Shipboard Transportation Simulator (STS) as described in TP-91-01, Transportability Testing Procedures. TIC test load consisted of four inertly-loaded MLRS pods blocked and braced in a side-opening commercial container. Upon completion of the test, sequence, the test load was inspected for failure of the blocking and container. No failures occurred. The procedure is recommended for acceptance to ship MLRS pods In the tested configuration for all modes of transportation.
