Criteria for the Design of a Strain Attenuating Obturator

Abstract

Dramatic reductions in dynamic strains in gun tubes are shown to be possible when the ballistic pressure rise in the vicinity of the projectile is made less abrupt. Numerical examples are given for the case of a ramp-step ballistic pressure loading in a 60-mm gun tube as the projectile velocity nears critical.
