Management of Repair Parts in the Heavy Division: Is There a Better Way?

Abstract

The Army expends billions of dollars in resources to provide the right repair parts at the right place and time. Despite this enormous expenditure, the Army's sustainment system fails to accomplish this task. The subject of this monograph is the search for a better way to provide ground equipment repair parts in the heavy division in order to generate and sustain combat power. This monograph first surveys the results of evaluations that focused on the repair parts management system. Second, it studies the current repair parts management system to identify the sources of the problem. Then it explores the areas of operations research and the private sector for ways to resolve the problem. The monograph analyzes and evaluates these possible alternatives to improve repair parts management in the heavy division.
