PL/GPD DMSP Data Archiving from VAX to Exabyte Tapes

Abstract

This report describes the archiving of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) data from VAX tapes to Exabyte tapes mounted on SPARC stations. This effort encompasses automatic creation of filenames for the data fields, transferral from one environment (VAX) to another (Unix), logistics for each step of the operation, devising a Data Dictionary file to provide the user information regarding the data format used for each file, writing a User's Guide for the archiving process, and training PL/GPD personnel how to archive and retrieve the data efficiently and accurately.
