Epidemiology of Podiatric Injuries in U.S. Marine Recruits Undergoing Basic Training

Abstract

This study determined the incidence of podiatric injuries that occurred during 233,946 recruit days at risk (RDAR) among U.S. Marine Corps recruits undergoing basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), San Diego, California, between 5 February and 25 April, 1990. ICD-9 codes of the initial injuries were identified to determine incidence rates, and recruit-days at risk were calculated from MCRD weekly population counts. Training-related initial injuries to the foot occurred at a rate of 3.0 new injuries per 1,000 recruit-days. The highest specific rates of injury occurred with stress fractures to the foot (0.56/1000 recruit-days), ankle sprains (0.53/1000 recruit days), and Achilles tendonitis (0.39/1000 recruit-days).
