The Use of Tobacco Products Among Naval Special Warfare Personnel

Abstract

Tobacco product use questionnaires were completed by 210 U.S. Naval Special Warfare Sea, Air, Land (SEAL) personnel. Results indicate a relatively high use of smokeless tobacco products in this population. SEALs have a lower prevalence of cigarette smoking (7% versus 39%) than that of the general Navy population (Conway, Trent, and Conway, 1989). However, SEALs have a significantly greater use of smokeless tobacco (33% versus 17%). This occurs despite the relatively high fitness orientation of this group. SEALs appear to ignore the possible health and performance impact of smokeless tobacco products. An intervention to correct this condition to improve short-term performance and long-term health is indicated....
