A Version and Configuration Model for Software Evolution

Abstract

This report introduces a design database model and a version control and configuration management model for keeping track of the overwhelming numbers of software system versions that are produced by programmers today. The system keeps track of which object version belongs to which system configuration in an automated manner that is transparent to the user. This system will give software development teams the chance to concentrate on what they need to do to fix or improve system components instead of trying to manage this enormous amount of data. The paper also describes the authors' Design Management and Job Assignment System (DMJAS), which uses these two models to manage both design data and their development team.
