Education and Training of Women in the United States Military: A Study of Primary Leadership Institutions

Abstract

This research paper presents a literature review of the education and training of women in the U.S. military. Literature sources included the DACOWITS selected bibliography and the Women's Research and Educational Institute (WREI) bibliography. From these lists, a number of books, articles, and reports were selected. The difficulties of women serving in the military seemed to be focused on the following areas: (1) unequal treatment under the law (i.e., it is legally lawful to exclude women from certain military tasks); (2) women not receiving the education or training required for career and personal advancement or promotion; and (3) the treatment of women in the Service by their male peers, subordinates, and superiors as related to their gender. The author chose materials relevant to the nationally debated policy of including women in the military, the role of women in the military services, and their degree of integration. The research focused on the Service academies, since they are the educational starting point for many of the Nation's military leaders. The review provides information on the attitudes and behaviors of both genders as they cope with gender integration in the military.
