Relations Between Blue Whiting Biomass and Satellite Derived Phytoplankton and Temperature in the Norwegian Sea

Abstract

The abundance of blue whiting in the Norwegian Sea is correlated with surface phytoplankton concentration and sea surface temperature (SST) measured from satellite. The distribution and abundance of fish has significant impact on active acoustic volume reverberation. Acoustic fish abundance ship surveys conducted in the Norwegian Sea in August from 1984 to 1986 were analyzed for relationships with the monthly coincident average surface phytoplankton and SST. Little correlation was observed between blue whiting and phytoplankton or SST separately suggesting that fish distributions are better coupled with a multiparameter approach. The spatial and temporal averaging of high resolution satellite imagery may inhibit correlations. Features such as ocean fronts are prime contributors to fish abundance distribution. Average ocean properties (such as phytoplankton concentration or SST) can mask the local ocean events that are partially responsible for fish distribution.
