Single Electron Charging Effects in Mesoscopic Systems

Abstract

We report the investigation of two ultra-small tunnel junctions in series. These junctions have capacitances on the order of 10-18 - 10-19F each. In this regime the charging energy associated with a single electron tunneling event (e2/2C) can be made significantly larger than thermal fluctuations (kBT) at liquid helium temperatures. As such, measurements of the tunneling current as a function of voltage show unique features associated individual electron tunneling events.
